Die im Januar 1990 wieder zunehmende Zahl an Auswanderern setzte die westdeutschen Politiker unter Handlungsdruck, denn in der BRD drohte die Stimmung gegen die Übersiedler zu drehen. Vor diesem Hintergrund scheint es ein Leichtes, ex post die politischen Fehler im Rahmen des Transformationsprozess der DDR-Wirtschaft in das marktwirtschaftliche System der BRD aufzuzeigen. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat jedoch nicht den Anspruch, eine pauschale Beurteilung der Währungs-, Wirtschafts- und Sozialunion vorzunehmen, sondern beschränkt sich auf einen Teilaspekt der sich gerade im Nachgang der Vereinigung als problematisch erwiesen hat und teilweise bis heute als Determinante der wirtschaftlichen Leistungsfähigkeit der neuen Bundesländer genannt wird - den Produktivitätsrückstand der DDR-Unternehmen im Vergleich zu westdeutschen Standards. In den folgenden drei Kapiteln wird der Schwerpunkt zunächst auf eine Definition des Produktivitätsbegriffs gelegt. Ebenso ist eine kurze Zusammenfassung der Rahmenbedingungen von BRD und DDR Wirtschaft unerlässlich, um das Fundament für die in Abschnitt drei erfolgende Analyse von Ursa¬chen und Wirkungen der Produktivitätslücke zu legen. Den Abschluss der Arbeit bildet ein kurzer Fazitteil, der auch die Brücke zwischen den inhaltlichen Ergebnissen und heutigen Herausforderungen exemplarisch aufzeigt
