chael is lost in “victimhood” due to the economic downturn of the times, and carries the victimhood into other aspects of his life.It is also clear that Michael has not lost all hope, not only by the fact that he doesn’t end his life, he is in continual thought about what is going on in his life-this simultaneously gives the reader hope. In the “treading water” stage of the story, Michael chooses to have lunch with a good friend of his. During this lunch, it becomes evident that Michael has been beating himself up rather well for not being able to pull himself together. The good friend metaphorically gives Michael a good shaking by speaking to him about attitude and his view on life. Ultimately the friend sets up an appointment with “Coach” who is the perfect “lifeguard” for the drowning Michael.Besides a very compelling story line about the life of Michael, the people he meets and the challenges he faces, there is always a sense of hope that Michael will make it out of the circumstances he finds himself in. In addition, along the way of the story, the reader is taken on the journey with Michael on how to “pull himself up and dust himself off.” This part is accomplished both through story and notes at the end of most of the chapters. Michael’s understanding of the fact that he must make some basic changes in the way he operates in life is illustrated by the “notes” he begins to keep and the actual placement/timing of the notes in the book when he sees that he must become more organized. In addition to the notes in the book, there are many helpful hints to become more organized for anyone doing just about anything—granted some of the hints are very specific to the real estate business, but most are valuable for anyone. Many of these hints/tips are explicitly explained for the reader in the book.In keeping with a believable story, Michael doesn’t make an immediate “recovery” from his victimhood or run of “bad luck.” He has setbacks and is forced to face these setbacks in a way that the reader sees Michael is learning that the process is not necessarily easy, but doable if the drive is there. This kind of book could easily run into the issue of being to “preachy/teachy”, but the author has interwoven the advice, hints and tips in such a way that the information given is not intrusive. Instead, in tends to answer questions in the readers mind: I wonder how you do that? And then the author gently steps in through other characters, notes and resources with the answers.Another reason this story is compelling is the use of analogy throughout the book. There are several stories within the big story that keep moving the main story ahead. And “quietly” the reader is learning right alongside the main character of Michael, most often by the very loveable and relatable character of “Coach.”Several times I thought of Og Mandino, author of The World’s Greatest Salesman, while reading Coach Will. The styles are different, but in many ways the intentions are the same. You didn’t have to be a salesman to enjoy and be inspired by Og Mandino’s book and you don’t have to be in the Real Estate business to enjoy and be inspired by Todd Gehrke’s book.
